I experienced something new today. Well, new to me at least, but pretty cool nonetheless. I arrived home and flipped open my trusty laptop, and there in my inbox was something I'd never seen before. For the first time, I received an invitation to participate in an exciting new anthology. This one is different for me because it's not an open call for submissions; rather, it's "by invitation only".
For this book, no open call will ever go out to the public at large. No hungry up-and-coming writers will get to vie for a spot in this TOC. The editor has hand selected his roster, and saw fit to extend an invitation to me.
It's different for me because during my entire short career to date, the procedure has involved seeking out open calls and sending whatever you have that fits the theme, hoping to catch the eye of the editor/s. This time around the roles were reversed - the editor came to me, based on his impression of my previous work and my ability to . I still have to come up with something he likes, but that massive first hurdle is already out of the way.
I can't reveal any details about the publisher or the book itself - it's still way too early for that - other than to say it's a project I'm really interested in and am thrilled to have been included on the short list. I've previously worked with some of the others who were invited, and it's a great lineup. More details to follow in the coming months!
