Another step along this writing path, and another cool opportunity has presented itself. Once again it's something I've never experienced before, in a number of ways.
Last week Marsha and I applied for an artist-in-residency opening, and yesterday we were informed we'd been successful. What this basically is involves putting artists on public display while they do that thing they do. In our case, we're meshing our respective styles into something we hope will turn out very cool. As a horror writer, I'm going to write something creepy and scary. As a visual artist, she's going to create images based on the storyline.
It's a new experience for me because 1) I'll be in the public eye while I create, not normally something I would ever subject myself to; 2) I'll be creating something specifically for someone else to work from; and 3) I'll be directly collaborating with another artist, one whose specialty is not writing.
One amusing note: shortly after sending in our application we got a reply from the head of the selection committee. She wanted to inform us they considered us strong candidates fore the program, but that they wanted to see a sample of the sort of horror we'd be creating.
Marsha and I have worked together before, but never in this way or on the same project. This gives us a chance to see what we can do and hopefully create something impressive on more levels.
